Degas is definitely the name that comes to mind when one thinks about the paintings of ballerinas. The fluid yet striking movements he has created on his canvas has stuck with us throughout all these years. He has illustrated an urban and modern life which we can now only dream of. Yet, how many people have realized that this artist has kept a secret from the world, hiding over 150 pieces of artworks unseen until his death in 1917?
In hands with the M.T. Abraham Foundation and MGM, Le French May is presenting Edgar Degas’ exhibition in Asia, entitled “Figures in Motion”. 74 pieces of bronze sculptures, which were kept as a mystery by the artist due to the negative reactions he has received on his “the Little Fourteen Year Old Dancer” sculpture, will be on display.
Now, the public gets to “wander behind the curtains or on stage at the Opera House in Paris, walk along horse races or peek into boudoirs” through the visuals and context of these initially wax, clay and plaster made sculptures. The form that we see them in now are cast by Albert Bartholomé after the artist’s death. Maintaining the artist’s signature capture of “extraordinary postures from unique angles under light and shade”, these 3D works are definitely just as representative of the artist as his classic paintings are.
