Cai Mei Khoo is the Editor in Chief of Buro 24/7 Malaysia; a digital fashion, design and lifestyle magazine which launched in 2011 and now has versions across 11 countries including Australia, Middle-East, Mexico, Russia and Singapore. Cai Mei was previously the Deputy Fashion Editor at Harpers Bazaar, Malaysia but started her career at the bottom of the ranks as an intern there, where she did everything from writing, loaning samples and getting coffee. She proudly highlights, “It was, and still is, a job that’s very much driven by passion”.

Why do you love working in fashion?
I love that I’m constantly surrounded by creativity (and beautiful things). Fashion is more than just being about the clothes – it’s about the incredibly creative people involved, it’s about the ideas and references behind the collection, or the set design, or even in a particular colour used. It’s fast-paced and fabulously exciting.

What are the most important attributes in publishing?
Hard work, dedication, passion, initiative, imagination, humility, and a positive attitude. A sense of humour helps too.

What would you like to see happen in the Malaysian fashion scene?
I would love to see more Malaysian designers getting recognised on a global platform, and perhaps one day we’ll have a fashion week that will rival the international ones.

How do you see the future of fashion?
There’s so much happening that I’m excited about. The founder of Buro 24/7, Miroslava Duma, has recently launched Fashion Tech Lab (FTL), a venture capital fund and tech accelerator that merges the worlds of fashion and tech. One of the companies FTL works with is Orange Fiber, which produces a silk-like material from waste orange peels. Then there’s another company based in San Francisco that produces lab-grown leather and fur from stem cells.

Whose wardrobe would you love to take a peek into?
Iris Apfel for unique vintage pieces and OTT accessories.

What is your go to look?
Skinny jeans, white or striped shirt, with Gucci slides or Nike sneakers.

Describe your style in 3 words.
Preppy, casual, classic.
