Do you ever spare the time to stop and read signs anymore? Though contemporary signs are quite uniform and do not reveal much of a story, historical signages are doors into different histories.
Upon decommissioning in 2006, a collection of historical signages has been left intact in the Declared Monuments. These signs have served different purposes, reinforcing rules and informing building functions, as well as presenting craftsmanship and design styles at the time.
Since the end of June, Tai Kwun has been running the exhibition Look Left Look Right: Historical Signage. They have encouraged visitors to observe signages beyond their function, but through their choice of materials, language, and font types. An exhibition map is also available on site for visitors to freely explore the area themselves, or they can choose to join guided explorations with signage experts to unveil interesting and valuable messages behind the artifacts.
