Founded by Penelope Gazin and bandmate Kate Dwyer in 2015, Witchsy is a counter reaction from their experience with the current largest online craft market platform – Etsy. As previous users themselves, Gazin realized that her account was banned whenever the platform figured her products were not “family-friendly” and this was problematic for her. “We were inspired because we heard Etsy was going to start kicking people off their site for selling “occult” items. Penelope had been selling her art and pins on Etsy for six years and had regular problems with their censorship.” This became the basic idea for the start of Witchsy.
Creating a similar but more free-flowing online community for different artists, Witchsy offers an array of products such as pins, art, fashion, and housewares. They also connect customers directly with the selling designers themselves. This way, not only are the designers fulfilling the orders themselves to ensure maximum quality, it also creates an intimate relationship between the buyer and the seller which allows Wtichsy to “engage with a rapidly expanding creative culture all in one place.”
