Did you know that the Star Ferry Co. Ltd was founded by a Parsee merchant named Dorabjee N. Mithaiwala? And did you know that the name ‘Star Ferry’ stems from a romantic reference – a line from the poem “Crossing the Bar”? Our ride on the Star Ferry now takes only 9 minutes, but this ’50 places of a lifetime’, which was ranked by National Geographic, once took each rider 40 minutes to cross the harbor. Not to mention, did you know that the Sedan Chair was a mode of transportation for “westerners to commute between their homes around the Peak and their offices in Central” and that it was a symbol of status? No wonder the sedan chair race is always held at the peak ever since 1975.
As we complain how the Hong Kong government has failed to preserve the history, heritage and culture in our city; have we truly done our part and learn about the city ourselves?
In response to this, UOB Art Space uniquely @ REGAL is collaborating with social enterprise Les Beatitudes to present ‘Tie · Journey’ – a very powerful art exhibition which not only feature works inspired by the history of our city, but also showcases the rarely mentioned group of craftswomen from the districts of Sham Shui Po, Wong Tai Sin, and Tin Shui Wai. Whilst we appreciate the crafts by African, Indonesian, and Japanese women; why not stop and acknowledge the group of stay-at-home mothers who are equally equipped with talent and creativity in our own city?
Adopting local topics including Star Ferry, Peak Tram, and pawn shop; a collection of collages, bags, and leather goods are created using recycled materials. These shared traditional has inspired for products which help us take a glimpse back into our unique culture, and they also help raise awareness to the “local artists who devote their effort and energy to enriching the liveliness of Hong Kong neighborhoods.”
