Even though it seems as though they are under the radar, there are a vast amount of design schools here in Hong Kong. However, there has never been a joint-school design exhibition to showcase our local talents. This year, hosted by FHKI and DCHK, will be the first ever DesignXcel, where a total of 16 local design institutions join hands together to exhibit their selected graduate’s yearlong project. Chosen from over 4,000 full-time 2017 design graduates, a total of 200 pieces will be on display at the Exhibition Gallery of Hong Kong Central Library in the beginning of this month.

“Since the 1970s, there has been a growing number of design schools in Hong Kong and each school organises their own graduate exhibition every year around May and June, but there was never a joint-school platform to showcase their accomplishments,” said Professor Eric C. Yim, JP, the Deputy Chairman of FHKI & the Chairman of DCHK. Including five categories of designs including Graphics, Advertising & Visual Communication, Product & Industrial, Fashion & Image, Digital & Interactive, Architecture, Interior, Spatial & Environmental; the exhibition will incorporate interior designs, VR technology, as well as 2D and 3D images.

The DesignXcel aims to “establish a sustainable and well-defined link for business and education so design graduates could be paired up with companies in a systematic manner”. This way, not only does the design students benefit from corporate’s social responsibility, the industry will also benefit from an overall rise of innovation level. This effect can already be seen through Bonnie Chan Chak Yee’s “A Kind of Rice Keeps a Hundred People” project. She was connected to Star Industrial Company Limited (Red A) and Artop Group and sponsored to re-package 200 rice steamer containers in her design. “This project brought people from Hong Kong manufacture industry, agriculture, printing and a fresh advertising design graduate like me together and eventually we created a product that belongs to Hong Kong and its people!” exclaimed Bonnie.
