Adrian Baynes

Adrian Baynes

It gets uncomfortable when someone stares at you in the room, it gets more uncomfortable when their group of friends do the same; but artist Adrian Baynes has turned that up quite a few notches resulting in a total of 225 eyes staring and following you.  This interactive installation is triggered by 6 sensors controlling the mannequin eyes to follow your movement, creating the illusion that they really can see and identify you. The simple but complicated motion of looking signifies such different ideas and connotations that causes viewers to feel good and bad, all at the same time. Like wise with other artists who investigate in the idea of gaze, this project further develops and experiments with the concept. Just the pure eye symbol represents different ideas for different people. One might like the eyes, for its attention giving aspect and a sense of importance created for the entering guest; one might feel completely opposite, for the awkwardness and self consciousness it signifies. Whether good or bad, the artwork successfully plays with technology and the human emotion, very intriguing and connecting to the public; making it one of the most memorable and successful piece of public interactive installation that I have personally seen.
