It was weird to see the Hong Kong government removing these pieces of art off the streets without any hassle, because either way, whether in regards to its aesthetic or its monetary value, they should have easily realized how valuable they are and how they could have potentially become a vital artistic asset for the city.
As citizens governed by such a conservative government, we should be grateful that the artist has yet to be discouraged by the artistic atmosphere here and is coming back to exhibit his works once again as a part of the highlighted events in Le French May.
Known as Invader, this French artist creates space invader images with mosaic tiles and have already ‘attacked’ 60 different cities around the world with them in the last 20 years. Hong Kong was the target for his third wave ‘invasion’ in 2014, but he was surprised to have found 90% of his works wiped off the walls within just a few weeks of their installments. Instead of being off-putted with the response, he is returning with an exhibition titled after the “Wipe Out” and will be exhibiting a body of works including the restoration of his pieces, videos, all new LED artworks as well as sculptures. To be hosted in the PMQ from the 1st to the 17th of May, we are definitely going to visit and enjoy what our government has failed to preserve for us.
