True that art should not be reserved only for the elites, to only be displayed in art galleries, and to only be savored by those who are wealthy in their pockets; yet, it is also true that a certain degree of formality induces a rather different feeling onto different pieces of artworks. Presenting their very first large scale Chinese contemporary art show in Macau; Galaxy Macau gathers the works by spectacular names including Yue Minjun, Jing Kewen, He Dan, He Sen, Wu Haizhou, Li Chao, Huang Liyan and Liu Yujie at Galaxy MacauTM and StarWorld Hotel, showcasing a total of 22 masterpieces for the public to endear.
Entry completely free of charge, the exhibiting works not only include iconic paintings but also three sculptural pieces, with a majority of them never being showcased before, debuting its existence to the public for its very first time. Apart from the show, educational programs were also held for Macau Polytechnic Institute’s students where the artists hosting sharing sessions about art; with in- house café, bars and restaurants also attributing their menu towards the show with delightful desserts.
Apart from the spot light stealer Yue Minjun; our favorite from the show are definitely works by Jing Kewen. Known for deriving his artwork topics from old photographs; his paintings often induce a kind of reflection, where the viewers are tempted to look back into their memories in seeking for associations with his works. Heavily influenced by the cultures of China, his style is very bright, very clean and very smooth. Instead of using a ‘fuzzy’ approach to portray the past, he translates age with a sort of unexpected perfection that romanticizes his portraitures and landscapes.
