Just as I have mentioned before – “whether you like it or not, it’s all about Asia now.” The amount of growth we see in the new media art scene in Hong Kong is already huge, not to mention how much it has expanded in China. Young artists are seen venturing out, merging technology with their creative projects not only for the growing market but also for its effectiveness in making a mark in the commercial art world.

Seeing hybrid pieces of traditional photography, painting, and calligraphy being merged seamlessly with video, audio, and other multimedia formats, it is evident that “young Chinese media artists are digging new paths that leave firm tracks across the drowsy field of contemporary art.”

On the Road: Young Media Artists in China is an exhibition which showcases such promising talents. Co-organized by City University of Hong Kong, the Guan Shanyue Art Museum in Shenzhen, and the Curatorial Committee of the Chinese Artists Association of the Museum; 40 new media pieces by 36 young artists from major contemporary art institutes and art organisations in China and Hong Kong are selected by curator Professor Maurice Benayoun from the School of Creative Media (CityU) to be featured.

Contrasting works from nine Hong Kong artists with faculty members from SCM, the exhibition offers an ambitious overview of the “new” versus the “old”, and how the “knowledge, aesthetic framework and academic contexts of the generation born after the 1970s and 1980s” differs and is growing into the “the current state of media art.”
