detour 2016

Running concurrently with the Business of Design Week, deTour 2016 is presenting itself as more than just our recognized art event, but a ‘game changer’ through their selection of artworks and what these pieces can do to alter ” the society’s perception and behavior”.

Crossing the boundaries of art, design, technology and society, they have deliberately included more young and local designers this year, in hopes to “shift(s) the paradigm, flip(s) the script on traditional order, and reboot(s) (our) systems.” Apart from “10 feature installations, around 10 pop-up exhibitions, one design dialogue per day on average, over 40 workshops on site, 60 satellite events scattered in town and up to 40 guided tours for the public”, deTour is also presenting their content in a way that is friendly for children so that the festival can be enjoyed by all.

One of their highlighted display is the “VI System” by Trilingua. This local graphic artist group has created a circular ping pong table which not only redefines the game, but also encourages interaction with the public, so that the art experience is not just to observe and to understand, but to engage and to have fun with. On top of that, there will also be “Intense:Intense”, a joint exhibition by Joe Chang (Taiwan) and Julius Hui (Hong Kong) which investigates the impact that different fonts and typefaces have.

Not to mention, “Bokusho” by Shun Kawakami, a piece which talks about the avant-garde calligraphy form from post-war Japan will be included. This installation piece allows viewers to “adventure through a forest of fabrics printed with calligraphic strokes and alphabets for a fascinating and immersive experience”. Last but not least, “Indigo Rain” by Yeung Chin (Hong Kong) is also highlighted in this festival. A progressively project, the exhibition will change over time as the indigo dye “gradually change(s) the pattern of a fabric roll and dress on display to reveal an ephemeral act of creation”.

With a lot of interactive artworks, this year’s deTour is definitely captivating and arousing to those who are dynamic and open-minded thinkers.
